Hotels
With a number of new openings – two international five-star and one three-star – and some renovations, the hotel scene in Copenhagen has greatly improved over the last few years. As the city is so compact, most hotels are located within walking distance of the centre. Today, the city offers more than 11,000 hotel rooms in total, with another 1500 new rooms before the end of 2005.
Local tax of 20% is automatically added to all hotel bills and it is customary to give bellhops a 10% tip. The prices quoted below include this tax and are for a standard double room, excluding breakfast unless otherwise stated.
Business
DGI Byens One of Copenhagen’s newer hotels, the DGI Byens is part of a massive sports and business complex located just a short walk from Copenhagen’s main railway station. The conference facilities cater for up to 1400 delegates, while the hotel itself has 104 smartly designed rooms. The décor is simple but stylish, with pine floors and mood lighting. Other plus points include a large swimming pool, Internet access through the in-room TVs and a health spa. For guests staying over the weekend, there are also plenty of family and entertainment facilities, including a water playground and a bowling alley.

A number of rooms have been pitched at the single female traveller and feature such extras as cosmetics and glossy magazines. Other facilities include an IT and business centre. Hotel Centrum Located very close to Copenhagen’s main railway station, the Hotel Centrum is a decent-value two-star hotel and one of the best-priced beds in town. The hotel is housed in an old 19th-century building with plenty of character. One drawback is that some of the 79 simply decorated and equipped rooms are not en suite. Potential guests should also bear in mind that business facilities are strictly limited and there are no modem points in the guest rooms.

Other Recommendations
Kong Frederick This unique hotel is located on the site of a 14th-century pub and until recently it served that very purpose. These days, Kong Frederick is something of a local secret – a very comfortable, atmospheric place to stay in the city centre, just a stone’s throw from Rådhuspladsen. Each of the highly individual rooms looks different, although the same English country-house feel remains throughout. Attractive décor touches include the use of plenty of dark woods and paintings of the Danish royal family. All rooms have modem points for high-speed Internet access and standard business services are available.

Phoenix Hotel The four-star Phoenix Hotel, centrally located in the heart of the financial district and only a few minutes walk from Nyhavn, offers 213 rooms and suites, all lightly and tastefully furnished in a style inspired by the French Louis XVI period. There is a charming, romantic air about the hotel, although it caters equally as well for business visitors as it does for holidaymakers, having modem connections in most rooms and a small business centre offering a full range of facilities.

71 Nyhavn This trendy hotel is set in the picturesque locale of Nyhavn, a canalside area of the city that teems with bars and cafés. The hotel occupies two 19th-century warehouses originally used to store spices and other goods from the Far East. The wood-beamed ceilings and the charming old-world ambience that make the hotel so special have been retained. Early booking is essential to secure one of the rooms facing the waterfront, while the waterfront corner suites are particularly sought after. Business facilities are limited, although there is one meeting room capable of accommodating for 16 delegates.
