Denmark hosted the World Badminton Championships in 1999 and is one of the top badminton-playing nations in the world. Local stars include Camilla Martin (1999 World Champion) and Peter Gade. Windsurfing (known as ‘boardsailing’) is also hugely popular. Football and handball are the favourite team sports. FC København (website: www.fck.dk) is the local football team (tel: (35) 433 131, tickets), playing at the national stadium, Parken, Øster Allé 50 (tel: (35) 433 131; website: www.parken.dk).

Tickets for sporting events are advertised in the Copenhagen papers, however, the easiest way for one to purchase tickets is through the Call Centre (tel: (70) 222 442).

Badminton: Courts are available for Dkk55 per hour, at Grøndal Centret, Hyidkildevej 64 (tel: (38) 341 109), and Nørrebrohallen, Bragesgade 5 (tel: (35) 831 001).

Fitness centres: Form and Fitness Parken, Øster Allé 42 (tel: (35) 550 078) offer passes for Dkk200, as do the other outlets, Form and Fitness Scandinavia, Amager Boulevard 70 (tel: (32) 542 888), and Form and Fitness Radisson SAS Falconer, Falkoner Allé 9 (tel: (35) 109 070). Less costly is the Hardwork Studio, Frederiksundsvej 5 (tel: (35) 812 283), which charges Dkk250 for four visits.

Golf: The Copenhagen region is a paradise for golfers, with 86 golf courses. The greater Copenhagen area alone has 25, 18-hole courses. Enthusiasts can practise their swings for Dkk126 per hour at the pay-and-play Copenhagen Indoor Golf Centre, Refshalevej 177B, Store Stålhal (tel: (32) 661 100; e-mail: info@cigc.dk). Facilities include an 800m (2624ft) put-and-chip course, 60 driving ranges, a shop and a café. Pay and play is also available for Dkk150-200 at Smørum Golfklub (tel: (44) 970 111; e-mail: smoerum@golfonline.dk), Skebjergvej 46, Smørum.

Sailing: Boats are available for hire from Copenhagen Boat Charter, Rosenborggade 10 (tel: (33) 930 333).

Squash: Nørrebrohallen, Bragesgade 5 (tel: (35) 831 001; website: www.noerrebrohallen.dk), and Grøndal Centret, Hvidkildevej 64 (tel: (38) 341 109), both provide squash courts for Dkk75 per hour. Copenhagen Squash Club, Vestersøhus, Vester Søgade (tel: (33) 118 638), has courts for hire at Dkk120 per hour.

Swimming: Good beaches near the city include Bellevue and Charlottenlund to the north and Amager Beach and the Beach Park to the south. There is an open-air pool in Fælledparken, Borgmester Jensens Allé 50 (tel: (35) 390 804).

Tennis: Indoor and outdoor courts are available for hire at Dkk130-145 per hour from B93, Svanemølleanlægget, Ved Sporsløjfen 10 (tel: (39) 271 890, for telephone bookings Monday-Friday 1200-1600). Hotel Mercur Vester, Farimagsgade 17 (tel: (33) 125 711), allows non-residents to use its outdoor courts for Dkk95 per hour. Københavns Boldklub, Peter Bangsvej 147 (tel: (38) 714 150), charges Dkk105/145 per hour, with an additional Dkk100 per person fee for non-members.

Windsurfing: Nautic Surf and Ski, Amager beach (tel: (32) 848 300), is open all year round.
